Fantasy on ‘the Ely Sequence’
- Composed: 23 June 2022 (St Etheldreda’s day)
- Duration: c. 3.5 mins.
- Instrumentation: Organ
- First performance: Benedict Todd at Great St Mary’s, Cambridge on the 23 June 2022.
- Notes: Fuelled by childhood memories, I wrote this little piece for the feast of the saint so closely linked with the Cathedral of our diocese, St. Etheldreda.
It is based on the plainsong ‘Ely Sequence’, which tells the story of St Etheldreda’s life, and is sung by the boys of the Cathedral Choir as part of the celebration of her feast day every year. As part of a rather mixed bag of memories from my time as a cathedral chorister at Ely in the late 1990s, this plainsong has stayed somewhere in the back of my brain as one of the happier and more beautiful things from this period.
